LUKE
24:13-35
Now on that same day two of them were going to a village
called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking
with each other about all these things that had happened.
While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came
near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing
him. And he said to them, "What are you discussing
with each other while you walk along?" They stood still,
looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered
him, "Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does
not know the things that have taken place there in these
days?"
He asked them, "What things?" They replied, "The
things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty
in deed and word before God and all the people, and how
our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned
to death and crucified him.
But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes,
and besides all this, it is now the third day since these
things took place.
Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were
at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find
his body there, they came back and told us that they had
indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some
of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it
just as the women had said; but they did not see him."
Then he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are, and
how slow of heart to believe all that the pro phets have
declared!
Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these
things and then enter into his glory?"
Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted
to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.
As they came near the village to which they were going,
he walked ahead as if he were going on.But they urged him
strongly, saying, "Stay with us, because it is almost
evening and the day is now nearly over." So he went
in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them,
he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.
Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and
he vanished from their sight.
They said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning
within us while he was talking to us on the road, while
he was opening the scriptures to us?"
That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and
they found the eleven and their companions gathered together.
They were saying, "The Lord has risen indeed, and he
has appeared to Simon!" Then they told what had happened
on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the
breaking of the bread
.
LUKE 5:1-11
Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret,
and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of
God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the
fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.
He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon,
and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then
he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat.
When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put
out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch."
Simon answered, "Master, we have worked all night long
but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down
the nets."
When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their
nets were beginning to break.
So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come
and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that
they began to sink.
But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees,
saying, "Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!"
For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch
of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and
John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.
Then Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; from now
on you will be catching people."
When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything
and followed him.
LUKE
9:56-10:9
Then they went on to another village.
As they were going along the road, someone said to him,
"I will follow you wherever you go."
And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have
holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man
has nowhere to lay his head."
To another he said, "Follow me." But he said,
"Lord, first let me go and bury my father." But
Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead;
but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
Another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but let me
first say farewell to those at my home."
Jesus said to him, "No one who puts a hand to the plow
and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."*
After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them
on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he
himself intended to go.
He said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the
laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest
to send out laborers into his harvest.
Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into
the midst of wolves.
Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on
the road.
Whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house!'
And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will
rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you.
Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they
provide, for the laborer deserve to be paid. Do not move
about from house to house.
Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat
what is set before you;cure the sick who are there, and
say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.'
(*note: Jesus is not encouraging disunity with family or
friends in this Scripture, nor is he suggesting that following
him means ignoring duties to family, however, there is an
urgency and a cost to discipleship and one must be prepared
to follow the Gospel of Jesus above all other things. There
are many good reasons why we could put off the urgent work
of the Gospel. Jesus makes it clear that there is no time
to be lost, and there is a huge risk in hesitation)

MARK 10:13-31
People were bringing little children to Jesus in order that
he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to
them.
But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them,
"Let the little children come to me; do not stop them;
for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.
Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of
God as a little child will never enter it."
And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them,
and blessed them.
As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt
before him, and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must
I do to inherit eternal life?"
Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one
is good but God alone.
You know the commandments: 'You shall not murder; You shall
not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not
bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father
and mother.'"
He said to him, "Teacher, I have kept all these since
my youth."
Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, "You lack
one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to
the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come,
follow me."
When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving,
for he had many possessions.
Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How
hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom
of God!"
And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus
said to them again, "Children, how hard it is to enter
the kingdom of God!
It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle
than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."
They were greatly astounded and said to one another, "Then
who can be saved?"
Jesus looked at them and said, "For mortals it is impossible,
but not for God; for God all things are possible."
Peter began to say to him, "Look, we have left everything
and followed you."
Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, there is no one who
has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father
or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the
good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this
age--houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children,
and fields with persecutions--and in the age to come eternal
life.
But many who are first will be last, and the last will be
first. "
LUKE 9:12-25
The day was drawing to a close, and the twelve came to him
and said, "Send the crowd away, so that they may go
into the surrounding villages and countryside, to lodge
and get provisions; for we are here in a deserted place."
But he said to them, "You give them something to eat."
They said, "We have no more than five loaves and two
fish--unless we are to go and buy food for all these people."
For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his
disciples, "Make them sit down in groups of about fifty
each."
They did so and made them all sit down.
And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up
to heaven, and blessed and broke them, and gave them to
the disciples to set before the crowd.
And all ate and were filled. What was left over was gathered
up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.
Once when Jesus was praying alone, with only the disciples
near him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say that
I am?"
They answered, "John the Baptist; but others, Elijah;
and still others, that one of the ancient prophets has arisen."
He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
Peter answered, "The Messiah of God."
He sternly ordered and commanded them not to tell anyone,
saying, "The Son of Man must undergo great suffering,
and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes,
and be killed, and on the third day be raised."
Then he said to them all, "If any want to become my
followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross
daily and follow me.
For those who want to save their life will lose it, and
those who lose their life for my sake will save it.
What does it profit them if they gain the whole world, but
lose or forfeit themselves?
LUKE 10:38-42
Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village,
where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.
She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet
and listened to what he was saying.
But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came
to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister
has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then
to help me."
But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are
worried and distracted by many things;
there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better
part, which will not be taken away from her."
JOHN 13:3-17
Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into
his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to
God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and
tied a towel around himself.
Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the
disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was
tied around him.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are
you going to wash my feet?"
Jesus answered, "You do not know now what I am doing,
but later you will understand."
Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet."
Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no share
with me."
Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but
also my hands and my head!"
Jesus said to him, "One who has bathed does not need
to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And
you are clean, though not all of you."
For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said,
"Not all of you are clean."
After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and
had returned to the table, he said to them, "Do you
know what I have done to you?
You call me Teacher and Lord--and you are right, for that
is what I am.
So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you
also ought to wash one another's feet.
For I have set you an example, that you also should do as
I have done to you.
Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their
master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent
them.
If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
MATTHEW 28:16-20
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain
to which Jesus had directed them.
When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.
And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in
heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I
have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always,
to the end of the age."
PETER 5:1-11
Now as an elder myself and a witness of the sufferings of
Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory to be revealed,
I exhort the elders among you to tend the flock of God that
is in your charge, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion
but willingly, as God would have you do it not for
sordid gain but eagerly.
Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples
to the flock.
And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown
of glory that never fades away.
In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority
of the elders. And all of you must clothe yourselves with
humility in your dealings with one another, for "God
opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God,
so that he may exalt you in due time.
Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.
Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your
adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to
devour.
Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your
brothers and sisters in all the world are undergoing the
same kinds of suffering.
And after you have suffered for a little while, the God
of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in
Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish
you.
To him be the power forever and ever. Amen.
